He went over to the Island and attempted to arrest the three or four whos'i names were given mm; tney resisted, and when the citizens of Ocra coke Island were ordered to assist in the arrest they absolutely refused and declared they would also resist to the death even if the whole state of North Carolina were to come upon them. Citizens ot Hyde county, on the main land, were then called upon, but they said it was no fight of theirs and re fued to respond to theSherifFs orders. MEETING TO-DAY COMMEMORA TIVE OF COL T. L. HARGROVE. Judgments in Some Civil Cases-A Di vorce GnntcdCoart Will Adjourn Tomorrow Afternoon. Some interesting civil cases tried in Granville Superior Court yesterday afternoon and today are: -Gilbert Thorp vs. Meadows & Wil kinson and Richard Hester, (suit for damages for accidental killing of horse) judgment by default for plaintiff. Sally Ann- Willifbrd vs. Lunsford Williford divorce granted. D. C. Farrabovv et al vs Elizabeth Green et al important lacd suit from Tally Ho township. A day has al ready been consumed in the trial, and all the witnesses have not yet been ex amined. Court will adjourn tomorrow after noon. K FETING OF THE BAR. The committee appointed to prepare resolutions commemorative of the life and character of Col. T.L.Hargrove,at 1 2:30 o'clock, through R. W. Win ston, Esq., offered their report, which was unanimously adopted and the chairman, Maj. T. B. Venable, request ed to present the same to the court Col. T. C. Fuller, of Raleigh, spoke i;i eloquent terms of Col. Hargrove, and eulogized his bravery, daunless courage and prominent traits of char acter. He j-aid in conclusion, "I am proud of the opportunity to lay this small wreath upon the tomb of my dead brother." ! Col. Edwards said that he had known him intimately for 35 years and that during ail these vears Col. Hargrove was pre-eminently "truthful, honest and brave;" that he had his faults, and his were the errors of strong and brave man. , x Col. Amis said that the committee had presented a jusi and accurate esti mate of Col. Hargrove's character and that he heartily endorsed what they report. . R. W. Winsfon, Esq., said that as older members of the bar had paid tributes to the memory of Col. Har grove, it was with great pleasure that he, a young man, could raise his voice in commendation of this brave,strong, minded "rn?n, who never gave forth an uncertain sound. He was the ac knowledged leader of his party in this section and stood forth the great soli tary oak in the forest of his people. That he was ever ready to espouse the cause of the weak and oppressed. His bearing toward young attorneys was characterized with courtesy and kind ness, and in him they could find an honest, willing adviser. - The meeting then adjourned, " . T. B. Venable, Ch'm. B. Joe Robinson, of Newbern, who had been connected until), recent ly with the A. & N. C. Railroad for the past thirty-eight years as track master, was found in bed yesterday morning with his throat cut. For the past few weeks he has been sick and despondent to which was attributed this rash act. ( apt. Robinson was seventy-two yeais old. The Winston Daily says : E. C. Hackney, Esq., editor of the Durham Recorder, who was in Winston yester day, tells us that the Durham Globe is to be revived by Mr. T. B. Eldndge.of the Lexington Dispatch. Important Happenings in Other Slates and Conn tries. Rev. Dr. Tal mage has returned from his tour abroad. The World's Fair bill in the New York Legislature failed to pass on its final reading. The trial of the suit for libel brought by Mr. Parnell against the Times was' to have begun Monday, but when the case was called counsel announced that the suit had been compromised, the Times paying Mr. Parnell 5,000 pounds damages. . It is reliably stated thai there are hundreds of people in South Dakato sitting in there farm houses going mad from want. The ground iscover ed with deep snow, the weather is bitterly cold, and they can neither go after relief, nor can relief come to them. In the National House ot Represen tatives yesterday there was an under standing between the Republicans and Democrats that no effort would be made for the transaction of business, a majority of members being absent in attendance at the funeral of Mrs. and Miss Tia;y. The Montana deadlock was broken in the Senate yesterday morning. A motion was made to consider the bills from the republican Honse and two democrats demanded the ayes and nays. Seven republicans voted in the affirmative, the Democrats not vo ting. Lieutenant Governor Richards held a quorum was present, because two democrats had called for the ayes and noes, and declared the motion carried. The Senate is now consider ing House bills.
